DevOps Engineer Job Ads: What 150 Postings Really Require
We analyzed 150 real DevOps Engineer job postings to find out what employers actually ask for. The single most common requirement, general DevOps engineering experience, shows up in only 23.33% of ads, which tells you a lot about how fragmented this role's expectations are. No skill, tool, or certification appears in a majority of postings, so building a strong match means covering several mid-frequency requirements rather than chasing one dominant one.

What the data reveals about the most-demanded skills
Infrastructure as Code is the clearest recurring theme, appearing under multiple phrasings: 'Infrastructure as Code' (14.67%), 'Infrastructure automation' (12%), and 'Infrastructure as Code (IaC)' (9.33%). Combined, that's a strong signal that IaC fluency is close to a baseline expectation even though no single phrasing crosses 15%. Kubernetes (12%) is the most-named specific tool, followed by AWS and Docker, tied at 7.33% each, and CI/CD shows up in at least five different variants, which suggests employers care about the concept of CI/CD pipelines more than any specific tool implementation.
Gaps that are easy to fix vs gaps that aren't
If you have IaC or CI/CD experience but describe it only as 'automation work' or 'deployment support' on your CV, that's a presentation gap: an easy fix, since the substance is already there. A harder gap is years of experience: 10.67% of ads specifically want 5+ years of DevOps engineering experience, and no amount of rewording closes that if you're at year two or three. Similarly, if an ad names Terraform (6%) or Azure DevOps (6.67%) specifically and you've only used a competing tool, that's a real skills gap worth addressing through a project or course rather than clever phrasing.
How to stand out for this role
Since Infrastructure as Code appears across three separate phrasings totaling over 35% of ads when combined, naming the specific tools you used (Terraform, CloudFormation, Pulumi) rather than just saying 'IaC experience' will help you match more postings automatically. Also name your CI/CD tooling explicitly (Jenkins, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps) since 'CI/CD pipeline experience' fractures across at least six different requirement phrasings in this data, meaning ATS systems and recruiters are scanning for specific terms, not just the general concept.
